Carl Smith

Having grown up in Santa Fe New Mexico, Carl Smith was inspired by the vibrant art scene there and at a young age began experimenting with a variety of mediums including ceramics, metal welding, sculpture, painting, stencil, screen printing, graffiti, and even bronze casting.

After completing his BFA at Cooper Union in New York City Smith moved to Berlin Germany where he has continued exploring his mixed-media approach which incorporates elements of collage, photography, screen printing, air brush, painting, as well as high gloss resin.

His current paintings are enigmatic works that play with a viewer’s expectation and perception by implying a deep three dimensional surface. Created on raw linen, these artworks contrast the fabric’s rough surface and neutral color with areas of lustrous high gloss resin lacquer applied over boldly colored shapes.

Smith is also well know for his limited edition prints on archival Rives BFK cotton paper that bring an energetic Urban Art character into a fine art printing context.

Smith has now exhibited his work in France, Germany, Norway, Switzerland, Holland, the U.S.A, and the U.K. and he has been showing his work consistently in Beverly Hills California at Artspace Warehouse gallery for over a decade now and even longer at their affiliate space in Zurich called Kunstwarenhaus. His work was recently exhibited in the Muzeuem Sremski in Western Poland.
